- Holland - Friesland Tour I

from Hindeloopen via Amsterdam to Vinkeveen - or vice versa.

Minimum 7 nights. Ideally 10 nights. If you skip Amsterdam, you can save about 10 sailing hours.

Route details:

180 km, 57 bridges, 7 locks, approx. 6 driving hours per day.

Starting or end point is Hindeloopen. The small, pretty town, which has had town charter since 1225 despite only 900 inhabitants, lies directly on the Ijsselmeer and offers a relaxed start to your houseboat holiday, or a relaxing end to it. Stroll through the beautiful town with its many wooden bridges, picturesque old houses and small souvenir shops. And don't forget the Ijsselmeer with its beaches and numerous water sports.

Workum (Frisian: Warkum): old town centre with the lively market square "De Merk" where many pubs and restaurants are located, the historic town hall, several marinas on the Ijsselmeer.

Sneek: with 33,000 inhabitants, the third largest town in Friesland, despite its size with a lot of flair, partly due to the many canals that run through and around the town. Historic city centre, Rococo-style town hall and the famous large water gate - once part of a defence system, today Sneek's landmark. Numerous restaurants, cafés and shopping facilities.

Woudsend: beautiful water sports village between Heegermeer and Slotermeer.

Lemmer: seaside resort on the Ijsselmeer with beautiful beaches and clean water. Water sports and shopping facilities. Orchid farm, a good 10 km from Lemmer.

Steenwijk: the centre of northwest Overijssel. You can get a nice overview by climbing the tower of St. Clement's Church.

Giethoorn: idyllic village - also called "Venice of the North" because of the 170 bridges. The bridges connect numerous small peat islands on which thatched farms stand.

Elburg: small historic Hanseatic town with many monuments and museums. The town is surrounded by canals, ramparts and remains of town walls.

Harderwijk: Hanseatic town with an attractive centre, green spaces and terraces. The historic buildings now house shops, restaurants and galleries, among other things. Veluwe nature reserve, pleasant beach boulevard.

Horst beach: watch windsurfers and kiters using this popular beach, which is also perfect for beginners, for their sport.

Amsterdam: the canal belt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The picturesque water canals, the special charm of the historic city centre with its lively people and stately mansions are worth an extended visit. Visit one of the many houseboats (museum), or discover the differences, offers and sights of the districts around the centre.

Amstelveen: numerous shopping and nightlife opportunities in the new city centre, parks worth seeing, e.g. the 900-hectare "Amsterdamse Bos". Historic tramway.
