The Land of the Windmills

Frisia and North Holland

Come to the land of windmills, water (about 1/7 of the Netherlands consist of water), and the fields of tulips.

The Netherlands have a thick net of waterways with small rivers, many lakes that are ideal for swimming, and a great number of connection canals. The inhabitants of this country, that even today are fighting against the sea’s might to protect the land from floods, are tightly connected to the water.

The most famous water sports areas are in Friesland with its waterways that are almost free from locks and its beautiful lakes as well as Northwest-Overijssel, Flevoland and North Holland. In order to travel on the Dutch waterways it’s not necessary to be in possession of a licence. Some experience in conducting a vessel is, however, of great help. The water levels are almost even and constant but the many drawbridges and narrow harbors demand the full attention of the skipper.
The skipper should already make him or herself acquainted with the maps and symbols before the start of the trip.
With the exception of the tide land, the Western Scheldt, and the North Sea, as well as the big rivers and the Ijsselmeer (for this you need a special permission by the provider of the boat) basically all waters can be navigated on.
