Itinerary suggestions Holland

The routes mentioned are only suggestions for your houseboat holiday. Of course, you are also welcome to put together a route according to your own ideas. The distances and travel times in the route recommendations are based on experience at average speeds of 6-8 km/h. The time needed to pass a lock is on average 15-20 minutes (but this depends on the speed). The average time to pass a lock is 15-20 minutes (but depends on the season and traffic). Please also note the "Lock and bridge opening times"! These can vary from sailing area to area.

 

Cities Tour

from/to Vinkeveen via Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht

Minimum 7 nights, ideal is 10.

Route details:

170 km, 82 bridges, 14 locks, approx. 6 sailing hours per day.

Starting and ending point is Vinkeveen - the perfect starting point for your houseboat holiday. The Vinkeveense Plassen lake district is centrally located between Utrecht and Amsterdam and is a popular recreation and water sports area.

Breukelen:
Eponym of the New York borough of Brooklyn. Between Breukelen and Utrecht lies the beautiful De Haar moated castle.

Utrecht:
traffic-calmed city centre with idyllic canals, cathedral with underground visitor centre, numerous shopping and cosy places to stop for a bite to eat.

Oudewater:
lively market square surrounded by historic buildings. World-famous witch scales.

Gouda:
Guided tours, "High Cheese" in the garden of the museum, everything revolves around the famous cheese ... Among other things, the traditional cheese market takes place once a week between April and August. Historic old town.

The Hague:
not to be missed! Seat of the government and the royal family, i.e. there are several palaces and large parks as well as numerous embassy residences and government buildings. Chic, yet manageable city with great shopping, beautifully laid out central squares used as terraces by the adjoining restaurants and cafés. The beach is less than 10 km from the city centre - The Hague's Scheveningen district is probably the best-known seaside resort on the Dutch North Sea coast.   

Delft:
university city, historic townscape criss-crossed by canals, members of the royal family are buried in the crypt of the Nieuwe Kerk. Delft is famous for its ceramics factories. Birthplace of the painter Jan Vermeer (Baroque).

Kagerplassen:
small lake system connected by short waterways, enchants with its location in nature and the surrounding windmills.

Leiden:
charming town, criss-crossed by numerous canals. Hundreds of mansions, churches and monuments along the canals, 20 m high fortress in the centre of the city with a great view.

Amsterdam:
the canal belt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The picturesque water canals, the special charm of the historic city centre with its lively people and stately mansions are worth an extended visit. Visit one of the many houseboats (museum), or discover the differences, offers and sights of the neighbourhoods around the centre.

Weesp:
Birthplace of the inventor of cocoa powder van Houten, old fortified town, many good restaurants and cafés with terraces directly on the canals. Spa centre.

 

Cheese Tour

from/to Vinkeveen via Amsterdam, Edam and Aklmaar, 1 week.

Route details:

150 km, 56 bridges, 14 locks, approx. 5 driving hours per day.

Starting and ending point is Vinkeveen - the perfect starting point for your houseboat holiday. The Vinkeveense Plassen lake district is centrally located between Utrecht and Amsterdam and is a popular recreation and water sports area.

Amstelveen:
numerous shopping and nightlife opportunities in the new city centre, parks worth seeing, e.g. the 900-hectare "Amsterdamse Bos". Historic tramway.

Amsterdam:
the canal belt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The picturesque water canals, the special charm of the historic city centre with its lively people and stately mansions are worth an extended visit. Visit one of the many houseboats (museum), or discover the differences, offers and sights of the neighbourhoods around the centre.

Edam:
Cheese market with historical performances on the forecourt of the "Kaaswaag", the 18th century cheese scale. Numerous monuments and small, winding streets with small restaurants.

Alkmaar:
folkloristic cheese market at the beautiful "Waagplein", historical centre with nice shopping streets, terrace cafés, pubs and restaurants. With your houseboat, you can cruise leisurely along the numerous "original" houseboats.

Uitgeest:
rural peace and idyll after the previous cities. Numerous water sports possibilities.
